Eyelid Surgery Risks and Complications

Dry Eyes

The tear ducts may be affected during surgery and cause the lubrication of the eyes to be decreased.  Artificial tears may be used to alleviate the symptom.

Lag Ophthalmus

Drooping of the eyelids after surgery would require surgical intervention if after 6 months – 1 year, the problem persists.

Asymmetry

Differences between the two eyes areas treated may necessitate further surgery.

Scarring

Scars are placed in the folds on the eyelids.  Scar revision may be necessary after everything is healed.

Infection

Rare and usually treatable with antibiotics.

Bleeding

Rare but may require surgical intervention.

Need for revisionary surgery

The above complications may necessitate further surgery.
